The Volcano is one of the favorite attractions of the island. Approaching by the excursion boat the frozen black lavas into the sea, the sight is impressive and imposing and is reflected in everyone's faces. Hot waters gush out and the smell of sulfur is very intense.

Santorini is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion dated back 3,600 years ago, feeding the myth of the lost Atlantis. Until about 1645 BC in the area was one island named Stroggili, when the volcano erupted and caused one of the largest explosions every seen in the world. The explosion caused the volcano to collapse and the impressive Caldera (a giant central lagoon, more or less rectangular, and measuring about 12 by 7 km, surrounded by 300 m, high steep cliffs on three sides) was created. The mild activity of the volcano after this eruption has built up two small volcanic islands Palea and Nea Kameni which impresses with its wild beauty and the imposing presence. Nea Kameni is the central volcano.

The two islands are visited daily by hundreds of people during the summer. Palea Kameni was the first to be formed after the Minoan eruption and is less than 2,000 years old. Has a total surface area of 148 acres, and a maximum elevation of 98.5 meters. It is a fascinating place to visit as the landscape has an unearthly natural beauty and it is definitely worthwhile to take a swim in the Hot Springs as the island is surrounded by warm murky waters that are known for their healing properties.

Nea Kameni became the newest island of the East Mediterranean sea as began to form only 425 years ago and its youngest lavas are less than 50 years old. It has a surface area of 840 acres, and its highest point reaches 127 meters above sea level.

When you arrive by the boat on the shore of the island you must follow a well graveled path that leads to a volcanic crater. Walking on the island gives the chance to see steam rising, which transforms the environment into a yellow wasteland. Remember to bring good walking shoes and a hat to protect you from the sun. Here you will have a panoramic view of Santorini from the west. Far away the white-house-covered Caldera looks like a snow-capped mountain.

The volcano is monitored closely by scientists.

You can reach these two islands by excursion boats and the visit is a unique experience that you should definitely try!
